At the end of each season, the National Basketball League rewards the best performers in its championships. But how are the winners chosen? Who votes, and how are the votes counted? Here's everything you need to know.
The basic principle: regardless of the trophy, each voter must designate 5 names, ranked in order of preference. This ranking is then converted into points to determine the final list.
In Betclic Élite
The awarded trophies:
The first division distinguishes two types of rewards.
Statistical trophies highlight the best numerical performances of the season:
Individual trophies, on the other hand, reward the overall value of a player or coach over the entire season:
Who votes and how?
According to the trophy, the institutions authorized to vote are not the same.
For the MVP, the starting five, and the best young player, the votes are equally split between professional players (50%) and accredited journalists in Betclic Élite (50%). The National Basketball Union (SNB) is responsible for collecting players' votes, while the LNB handles the media side.
For the Coach of the Year, the system involves three groups: the Basketball Coaches Union (SCB), which includes Betclic Élite coaches, accounts for half of the final result (50%). Journalists account for 37.5% of the vote, and the High-Level Basketball Technical Directorate (DTBN) completes the count with 12.5%.
In Elite 2
The awarded trophies
The same categories as in Betclic Élite are awarded.
Statistical trophies: top scorer, top passer, top rebounder, top blocker.
Individual trophies: MVP, first and second all-star teams, coach of the year, best young player, and most improved player.
Who votes and how?
Le système est identique à celui de la Betclic Élite, en impliquant cette fois les acteurs de l'Élite 2. Pour le MVP, les cinq majeurs et le meilleur jeune, joueurs et journalistes couvrant cette division se partagent les votes à 50/50.
For the coach of the year, the distribution is the same as in the first division: 50% for the coaches, 37.5% for the journalists, and 12.5% for the DTBN.
In U23 Championships
Young players have their own trophies, divided into two divisions: Espoirs Élite and Espoirs Élite 2.
In each division, three awards are given: the championship MVP, the all-star five, and the best young coach of the year.
It is the coaches of the training centers who are called to vote, each in their own division, to designate the winners of these three trophies.
Referee of the Year
A referee of the year trophy is awarded in both Betclic Élite and Élite 2.
It is the captains and coaches of each club who are called upon to vote.
The specific terms are defined jointly with the French Basketball Federation (FFBB), through its High-Level Refereeing division.
Eligibility rules
To be among the candidates for a trophy, a player or coach must meet two conditions: have participated in at least half of the season's matches plus one, and still be under contract with their club at the time of voting. Specifically, this threshold corresponds to 16 games in Betclic Elite and Espoirs Elite, 20 games in Elite 2, and 14 games in Espoirs Elite 2.
The Best Young Player trophy follows an additional rule: the player must be born in 2006 or later and have accumulated at least 40 minutes of play in professional league matches over the entire season.
